spin three times with your eyes closed in a room where there are books. make sure you ask the spirits in the room for a prompt that will be of value. they're going to direct you on fiction/non-fiction/personal/creative, but they're going to do it intuitively, with your reaction to what they prompt you with.
open your eyes. use the first book your eyes fall on, or the second if you know you aren't going to be able to get anything out of the first. (it never hurts to try, though. i've actually gotten decent results out of a moosewood cookbook with a similar exercise.) repeat process if the second book won't work, either. if the second book doesn't work, try again later, something isn't right with the timing.
find the third page in the body of the book's main text, after the title pages and introductions and all that. count three whole sentences in. you may choose between that actual third sentence and the one following it. if that third page is blank or does not have three whole sentences, you may skip to the next page that has three whole sentences.
you'll know you've found your sentence when reading it the first time makes you twitch.
once you have found a good trigger, thank the spirits in the room and leave a glass of water for them in offering.
("I wanted to see if he really understood anything." is the sentence i got from doing this exercise just now. TWITCH. if nothing else, you may use that.)
