grandma: very good! can you think of any others?
niece: ....i.
grandma: no, that begins with e.
niece: not that you see with, grandma. like [points to self] ME.
grandma: that's right! very good!
niece: igloo.
grandma: there's another.
niece: [thinks]
grandma: it's a hard one, isn't it.
niece: [nods]
grandma: how about... internet. iron. idea. independence. irritating. except some of those are kind of big words. you might not know what they mean, yet. do you know what irritating means?
niece: yes. like this morning with mommy.

illinois niece (pictured, four years ago) is a pretty fantastic definition of magical realism, to be sure. of course, she's a fellow leftie living in my childhood bedroom, so that's not too much of a surprise. :-)

I wish I could capture the things that have fallen out of my kids' and other kids' mouths in a jar. Because they are just TOO perfect.
